So I’ve signed up for my first ultra – That being the Terrapin 50K – 31.1 miles of mountainy goodness with 7500 feet of elevation. Last year I finished the 1/2 in 2:48. This year I anticipate much much longer than that. Nerves creep in now and again just thinking about it, but reading others race reports make me want to do it even more. Physically I don’t think I’ve got the mileage to do it, mentally I don’t know that I’ve ever experienced anything like this (not even sure what that will be yet). Time will tell. There’s just something about the challenge that makes it all the more interesting.

toddhacker: Mary, thank you for inquiring about the camera. I want you to know that I am very serious in selling it to you, so I will work with you, I think I may still have the original box, I will have need to check in the basement. The camera is in excellent condition, I do have a travel case that I can include for an additional $300. The case is very sturdy hard aluminum. I think giving this camera as a gift is an excellent idea. The sadness is that the camera will be wrapped up nicely, and it would be wonderful to use such a camera to capture the moment of joy they will receive when opening said camera. Ah irony, you bastard! But alas, such is life. Anyway, I will gladly accept your generous offer of $2150 and can ship your package upon payment. Sadly I do not have a PayPal account. But perhaps you could send the money via PayPal to one of your friends and they could in turn give you cash that you could send to me. But Mary, I must pause, I feel as though we’ve developed a relationship in our short correspondence, if you do not have the cash on hand to purchase such an item I would feel dreadful to urge you to use any form of credit. I can appreciate the friendship you must have to give such a glorious gift to your friend and I am sure they will use it for many happy years, it really is a good camera. I hope that your finances are in order to allow for such a lavish purchase. If you need other ideas for ways to raise the cash for such a purchase I am willing to help in any way possible.
In the past 2 days my DSL has gone kaput and now crawls at speeds slower than dial-up. My primary hard drive at work has tanked, taking with it at least 2 major projects 1 of which is not reproducible. Now my iPhone has run amuck and decided that it will deactivate when it feels the need and prompt me to connect to iTunes to reactivate. (real time update: just discovered the app I am trying to download is 25MB – so I’ll give the iPhone a pass on this one, my impatience with that download may be a result of the screwiness). All this to say, I need a break from technology. That could be why I enjoyed my run after work so much.
Almost 7 months later the motorcycle replacement parts have been ordered, rather, the one really expensive part. But warmer weather is here and there’s a little bit of money in the bank so, its time to get that baby running again then start saving some money on gas. In other news, Terrapin Mountain is less than 20 days away. I’ve been steadily upping my running schedule, just hoping to get rid of this cold before the race and I should be good.
I’ve never been in a “life or death” situation (i.e. Jack Bauer situation), but I can only hope that if I am and there is a damsel in distress with me that she will not act like the girls on TV. I’m talking about the:
guy: stay here
girl: no I’m coming with you
guy: it really would be much safer if you stayed here
girl: don’t argue with me, I’m coming
or
guy: stay here
girl: ok
guy: TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
girl: SNEAKING OUT TO HELP
bad guy: CAPTURES GIRL
guy: crap!
That whole routine is TIRED. Seriously, I can understand there is a highly elevated level of stress, and again I am basing this entirely off of an episode of 24, but I don’t think this is really the time to be arguing.
Just wondering if this is the case in actuality? Is it that they don’t want to be left behind? I probably wouldn’t, but its generally rare that you see the guys portrayed in that manner.
Well, what can I say, it snowed for once, mightily. Alas, that doesn’t stop work. Luckily Hank was gracious enough to help me clear off the car before work.
snow, actual snow falling in lynchburg, must have drifted into some new strange dimension where weather actually exists. this can’t last long though. more than likely the world will start spinning again and it will all be gone in the AM. well, today derekbennion and I made the training run on Terrapin Mountain, the very same mountain we will be attempting to run on March 28th. Around 10 of us made the run, started out a little cold, started snowing a few miles in and then kept going all day. I was expecting to finish somewhere around 5 hours but we managed to do it in 3:10 – (hours) *NICE. Now my legs want to sleep.
Ah words, where have you been. They’ve been working and running and dojo training. Funny how life speeds up and slows down. Well perhaps not funny, annoying… depends on what I need to get done at the time. And since I try not to bring work into this forum, that leaves little else to talk about. This past weekend I got to run in a 5K trail run at LU. A fun little experience I got to do with some co-workers. I placed 34th out of 150 and 13th in my age bracket. So that would be the most recent news. I’ll check back in when some more happens.
